One interesting fact - there exist also mainboards with ordinary Socket 7 but with AGP ;) Like my Gigabyte GA-586SGM with SiS 5591 chipset. So just AGP slot is not very good indicator of SuperSocket 7 mainboard as I though before ;)

I'm low income, and I still try to pony up for the Star*tech versions of things like this whenever I can. I have some of their stuff from well over a decade ago, and it's still working fine, while other no-name stuff I bought has proven unreliable or just not as flexible overall. In my view, the premium is worth it because I'm more likely to *still* be using it 5, 10, or even 20 years from now.

Ahh back in the days of just having integrated graphics, I recall saving up for two years to buy GTA Vice City. As Australia had it rated for mature 14+ but here in NZ it was 18+ (I was 14 at the time). Got it home so excited to play it, only to find our Compaq with a Celeron and Intel 815 graphics ran at 1-2fps outside of the spawn point haha. Loved playing Croc as well, it ran quite well in Software mode on a Toshiba 330 CDS a friend had, despite the terrible DTSN display

What did you use an external PSU for that GTX 1650 cause I know that OEM one wont.

so for a retro computer with only IDE, is sata ssd to IDE better? or does SD to IDE saturate the (Afaik very slow) IDE bus?

I have 200Mhz MMX with 64MB RAM. Last time I hooked it up it did power on fine. Don't have a 3D accelerator for it though. Wish I could get a 3DFX card for it but they're difficult to find in my country.

I got an 8800 Ultra for my Windows Vista, Athlon 64 X2 PC back then. Costs for it had dropped like a rock, so I practically had a steal (around $300-400 CDN). Lasted for so long, but actually died. It started with red lines across the screen, then blacked out soon after. Played it right up to Star Wars: The Old Republic. It still looked great with the 8800 Ultra.

Applied everything exactly same here. Gotek screen shows two points between digits and does not read the usb. What is the problem?

With the Samsung LS24C450 I wondered if there's any ways to check if it's a TN vs IPS? I've just bought one and had delivered (UK), full model code LS24C45KBW/EN version TR03 made in Romania, and I believe locked to 60Hz (reported as optimal in Info section of menu or what is reported to windows)

I've tried emulating in 86box (super accurate emulator) many builds and played around with Doom. If you stay within context and pretend it's 1993, I think it's playable on a fast 386dx if that was all you had. Any 386sx is miserable, I'm sure some people did it out of desperation though. If you remove that context, then a 486 is needed to make it feel closer to what we are used to today. Today we have source ports like GZdoom and vertical mouse aiming for doom with countless mods making it hold it's own against games 30 years newer.

The CF cards rated at 120mb/s will run literally the full bus speed at 100mb/s or even the full 118mb/s if you have UDMA133 bus. Those are pricier but performance-wise, win. The SSD is pretty close as well. But when I did my disk speed tests topped out at 40ish and 50ish mb/s, using an Intel 60gb and a wd250gb respectively

I like the look of software rendered games. Laser Arena I always play that in Software mode.

You missed out on Unreal 2004 - sure not... "that retro" but damn if it wasn't the best software renderer of all time! It really let me build out a lan party room out of P4's that would run in mostly software render, and a few with gpu's I was always impressed with it.

I grew up with Windows 3.1 and 95 but the first computer for my room and that I tore apart was a Dell Dimension 4100 P3 933 MHz with Windows Me. I still have it and i recently put an SSD in it and reloaded Me. It runs great! Let me tell you having native USB Support is such a massive time saver!

I do all my modern and retro GOG PC gaming on Windows 7, and I also have a DVI-to-RGB adapter on the TITAN X and a Trinitron CRT hooked-up as a secondary "monitor" so I can play retro console emulators on it. Then I do my retro XP gaming on, you guessed it, Windows XP. 🔥🔥

I was playing around with a student learner a former job. Tried to get a FarmingSim2021 Server running but failed at the client not supporting DX12. What did work was RDP to the server and run the game through that software renderer. Did not run very well with it being old v2 Xeons trimmed for Energy Efficiency. But it ran. Maybe even better with a more modern CPU for Software rendering.

I have AMD Barton 3000+ running without any issues with this board. I paired it with voodoo 5500 it is perfect and no cpu bottleneck at all. A GF TI 4600 is also a perfect match for this cpu.

there are games that are worth playing in software mode rather than 3D accelerated, mostly the ones that were originally designed with a software renderer and got hardware support with a patch later on. The graphics just look more crisp and rustic except of having blurry textures smearn all over the screen which make it look like a candy honeyland.

Thanks for the review just going to build a super7 system and need to decide if I should grab msdos 7.1 from win98 again or give freedos a Try. Will do the latter now. 😊
